Education

The Weber County School District covers all of Weber County except for Ogden, which is covered by the Ogden City School District. Both school districts have a notable history of progressive and innovative education. However, the Ogden School disctrict has struggled to keep up with a large influx of Hispanic students over the last 10 years. They are currently in the process of closing their inner city schools and moving the students out into the suburbs of Ogden.

In addition to the standard public schools, there are a number of Charter Schools. The Ogden Preparatory Academy is located in downtown Ogden and it serves elementary and junior high students. There are two charter High Schools. The Northern Utah Academy for Math, Engineering and Science (NUAMES) has two campuses. The Northern campus is located in Roy and the Southern Campus is in Davis County. The Da Vinci Academy is located in downtown Ogden. The Utah State School for the Blind and Deaf is also located in Ogden.

There are also a number of quality Christian Schools in Ogden. The St. Joseph's Catholic schools (K-12) and St. Paul's Lutheran School (K-8) are both located in Ogden. Christian Heritage (K-12), is a non-demoninational Christian Schools located in Riverdale. Layton Christian Academy (K-12) is located in North Layton and is operated by the Assemblies of God.,

There is a thriving home school community in Ogden, with and large support groups promoting homeschooling from either a Christian (UTCH) or and an LDS (UHEA) perspective. The laws for home education are relatively liberal and there are very few problems between home schoolers with government agencies.

The Ogden-Weber Applied Technology Center is a vocational school which has recently be promoted to college status. It offers self-paced programs for occupations which are needed in the community. Employers are usually hiring workers faster than they can be trained. A partial list of current programs includes informations systems, automated maunfacturing, principles of technology, electronics, quality assurance, drafting, bricklaying, carpentry, cosmetology, machinists, material handling, printing, and welding. Employment skills for individuals with disabilities are also provided.

Weber State University has a faculty of over 500 instructers teaching 14,000 students on a 350 acre campus. They offer over 70 fields of study with modest tuition rates. They have excellent science and fine arts programs, and are known nationally for their criminal justice and automotive programs. They tend to have an older population of students than most universities, and a large number of commuter students.
